Bumping Mics with Jeff Ross & Dave Attell Netflix – Review

Bumping Mics with Jeff Ross & Dave Attell brings something not very common in this realm of stand-up: a show made by two comedians. The risk of going wrong would be enormous if they weren’t Jeff Ross and Dave Attell. Being two of the top stand-up comedians in the United States, laughter is guaranteed. Putting these two together on stage couldn’t go wrong (watch here).

We can say that Bumping Mics with Jeff Ross & Dave Attell is an almost-irreproachable success. And why “almost”? Well, for it to be funny, there needs to be a certain alternation between the types of jokes, since there is a risk of it becoming tiring after a while. This is what happens here. However, the talent of the two comedians makes us watch it until the end, even if the show gets saturated after a while.

Two comedy pros

Jeff Ross is extremely well-known to those who accompany Comedy Central. He is one of the top guests for any roast show (which consists of calling a guest to embarrass them on stage, talking about things in their life with a funny bias) that the channel promotes. His participations are legendary, for example, in Charlie Sheen’s roast. Therefore, he is an expert in using others’ personality as the source for his jokes, and let’s face it, in that sense he’s the best.

Dave Attell hosts a show on the same channel, called “Insomniac”, which has garnered many fans for his cynical comedy style. He is also widely recognized as a great comedian who knows how to use his faults (and those of others) to make them laugh, and his half-serious expression, even when he’s making fun of something, is one of his high points. It makes everything funnier. The guy knows what he’s doing, and it’s no wonder he has many fans around the world.

The combination of these two in Bumping Mics with Jeff Ross & Dave Attell could only come in handy. While Ross uses his roast characteristics to mock Attell’s appearance and personality, the other does his best to make fun of his stage mate’s face with sappy jokes about him in both his personal and professional life. The union of these two comedy pros in the first half hour of the show is sensational. The problem begins when they do not “turn the page”.

The same tone

That is to say: they keep the same style to the end, which can tire the viewer. The two use the stage as a kind of a battlefield: the one who leaves the other unable to reply wins. And this is very funny at first, but then it becomes repetitive and boring. There is even the impression that their repertoire is quite limited.

This point of view is wrong. Probably there wasn’t a great preparation in the script of this stand-up, that could predict this type of situation. Overall, Bumping Mics with Jeff Ross & Dave Attell is great, funny and interesting; but to endure it to the end, you must know that there isn’t a wide range of themes, which other stand-up comedians have in order not to tire the public. This is a show for those who like the roast style, and can spend an hour laughing at this kind of joke. Keeping the same tone in the whole special may not have been a good idea, but Ross and Attell do their best to entertain the audience, and that’s worth the view.
